The referendum on Scottish independence held in 2014 could have been a historic event regarding succession of states inside the European Union, setting a precedent for an event not explicitly regulated by European Union Law. Although the poll result prevented it, we can identify the guidelines to be followed by EU Institutions in the event of an identical or similar assumption occurring. This paper studies the events in Scotland, beginning with the Scottish National Party victory in 2007 and ending in 2014 when independence aspirations were frustrated.
